A Blustery Day

I didn't go out to the cabin today. We worked until 6:30 on the job. When I walked outside it was cold and windy and cloudy. Just the kind of day where all you want to do is curl up under an electric blanket and vegetate, which is what I am doing.

This weather brought to mind my Daddy, who rode his white horse off into the sunset several years ago. I miss him, but he is in a better place now, I am sure.

When I was in high school we had a tradition. The first cold, cloudy, blustery day of fall Daddy would pick me up from school and we would go to Heard's Drug Store down on the square. They had a snack bar there, and on that particular day every year they would put on a big pot of beef stew. Daddy and I would go in just to eat a bowl of that stew.

We had no cell phones or such in those days. Why, our only phones were attached to the wall with wires! Can you kids imagine that! Unless you were a very, very rich family you only had one phone in the whole house, too. So Daddy couldn't call me to tell me he was coming by school to get me. I knew it because I could see what the weather was doing. I would walk out the main entrance (instead of going out the band hall door, which was closer for my usual walk home) and he would be holding up traffic in the parking lot, sitting right at the end of the sidewalk, waiting for me to 'come on now, before the stew is all gone'.

Yes, today would have been that day. No rain, as that would have canceled our 'date' and the pot of stew down at Heard's, too. It had to be a blustery day, just like Winnie the Pooh had in one of his books. I should have stopped at the grocery store on the way home tonight for a can of stew. Too late now. A crab salad sandwich will have to do. Daddy hated seafood. Oh well.

Y'all have a good evening and try to stay warm!
